A Journey Years in the Making — From 2023 to Today

Our IB PYP journey began in 2023 with a vision:
to elevate learning for children through inquiry, play, reflection, and meaningful action.
Over the past years, our entire school community worked together to bring this vision to life:

  • Teachers participated in ongoing IB professional development
  • Learning spaces were redesigned to support inquiry and agency
  • Documentation, curriculum mapping, and assessment systems were strengthened
  • Families experienced open inquiry events, student-led activities, and learning workshops
  • Students engaged in play-based investigations, agency-building routines, and real-world action
This journey has transformed our school’s identity, deepening our commitment to developing internationally minded learners who are curious, kind, and reflective.

Why the IB PYP?

The IB PYP empowers students to become active, compassionate lifelong learners who understand that they can make a positive difference in the world. It focuses not only on what students learn but how they learn, helping them develop the skills, attitudes, and confidence they need for an ever-changing future. The PYP cultivates:

  • Strong communication and thinking skills
  • Curiosity and confidence in asking questions
  • The ability to reflect deeply and take meaningful action
  • Respect for diversity and different points of view
  • Independent and collaborative learning habits

What IB PYP Brings to Aiwin Students

The IB PYP nurtures the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, and globally. Through the IB PYP, students at Aiwin:

  • 🔍 Learn Through Inquiry
They question, test ideas, experiment, and explore the world through hands-on learning.
  • 💬 Grow as Communicators
English learning becomes purposeful through expressing ideas, discussions, presentations, and reflection.
  • ❤️ Live the Learner Profile
Students strive to be Caring, Thinkers, Communicators, Risk-Takers, Reflective, Principled, Balanced, Open-Minded, Inquirers, and Knowledgeable.
  • 🌎 See Themselves as Global Citizens
Through six transdisciplinary themes, learners explore identity, responsibility, diversity, and real-world issues.
  • 🌿 Take Action
Students are encouraged to turn learning into action—helping others, solving problems, or improving their environment.

Why the IB PYP Is Especially Beneficial in the Early Years

At Aiwin, the Early Years PYP honors the belief that young children are naturally curious, capable, and eager to explore their world. The PYP supports early childhood development in ways that traditional models cannot:

  • 1.Play as Inquiry
Play is not a break from learning—it is learning. Children build concepts, language, relationships, and problem-solving skills through exploration.
  • 2.Developmentally Appropriate Learning
Teachers observe children closely and extend learning based on their ideas, interests, and developmental needs.
  • 3.A Strong Social-Emotional Foundation
The Learner Profile traits help children develop kindness, confidence, self-regulation, and resilience from an early age.
  • 4.Develop Executive Thinking Skills
Concept - based inquiry builds early critical thinking—sorting, comparing, predicting, questioning—forming the foundation for future academics.
  • 5.Early International Mindedness
Children interact with diverse cultures, languages, and perspectives through daily routines and play.
  • 6.A Natural Inquiry Cycle
Young learners move through the PYP inquiry cycle daily:
Wonder → We Investigate → We Discover → We Reflect → We Take Action
This rhythm mirrors how children naturally learn, helping them build confidence, agency, and joy in learning.
  • 7.Build a Lifelong Love for Learning Through Interest-Driven Inquiry
Students develop genuine curiosity and motivation as they explore their interests, make choices, and take ownership of their learning.

Looking Forward

Becoming an IB World School marks a meaningful milestone in Aiwin International School Toyonaka’s journey. Our PYP authorization strengthens our vision by providing a clear framework to nurture curious, confident, and internationally minded learners from the very start. With the PYP framework now in place, we are able to:

  • Deepen inquiry-based teaching and learning across our campus
  • Expand opportunities for student agency and action
  • Enhance teacher professional development through IB’s global network
  • Strengthen partnerships with families, supporting shared learning and engagement at home and school
  • Explore future expansion of IB-aligned programs across Aiwin campuses
  • Build active collaborations with IB World Schools in Japan and abroad
As we look ahead, AWIS aims to continue inspiring excellence in early childhood international education. This includes maintaining small class sizes, investing in innovative learning environments, and continually refining curriculum and assessment practices to ensure they remain both globally informed and locally meaningful.
Through the PYP, AWIS vision of early childhood education is strengthened: a place where every child is supported to grow as a compassionate, curious, and confident learner—equipped to engage thoughtfully with the world beyond the walls of AWIS, embrace diverse perspectives, and continue exploring, learning, and contributing throughout life.

Thank You

To our teachers, families, and students: you for your commitment, trust, and belief in our vision. We look forward to growing together as a proud IB World School.

Reflections from our Head of School on AWIS Achieving IB PYP Authorization

At AWIS, curiosity fills every learning space. In one classroom, a group of students gathers around a display about octopus tentacles, excitedly sharing what they already know and asking questions about how these fascinating creatures move and explore their environment. During this investigation stage, students notice how each movement connects to survival—how the creature hunts, hides, and interacts with other marine life. Moments like this remind Ms. Darlin Okada, our Head of School, why every step toward concept-based matters. The recent achievement of IB PYP authorization is more than a milestone—it is a celebration of the community, the students, and the vision that guides the school. For families, this milestone is a reassurance of the trust they have placed in the school. “Over the years, we have been steadily transforming our learning, our culture, our environment, and our shared purpose,” she explains. “Everything we do is guided by the belief that every child deserves a place where curiosity is nurtured and their voices are heard.” The transformation is evident throughout the school. Classrooms are thoughtfully designed to inspire exploration, while the curriculum challenges students and encourages them to think critically and creatively. “We have always strived to create an excellent learning environment—challenging yet inspiring, structured yet open to wonder—where children feel supported, motivated, and excited to explore,” Ms. Darlin notes. With the IB curriculum fully in place, the program is even stronger, deepening AWIS’s commitment to an education that is thoughtful, responsive, and rooted in what young learners need to thrive today and in the world they will help shape tomorrow. This journey has been a collective effort, and Ms. Darlin emphasizes the importance of support from beyond the school walls. “We are deeply grateful to the schools that have supported our activities and encouraged our journey, as well as the local communities that have welcomed us and enriched our programs,” she shares. She also expresses heartfelt appreciation for the IB organization itself: “We thank the IB for believing in AWIS’s vision and supporting us as we worked toward authorization. Their guidance and trust have been invaluable.” Reflecting on the personal significance of this journey, Ms. Darlin adds, “As both a principal and a parent of an AWIS alumnus, I’ve watched our whole school community come together for a shared purpose: to grow, to understand the meaning of learning, and to connect with our local, national, and global contexts.” To the staff, families, and students who have contributed to this achievement, her gratitude is immense. “To our dedicated staff, our supportive families, and most of all, our remarkable students—thank you. Your trust, energy, and spirit have made this possible. Together, we have built something special, and together, we will continue shaping a school where children learn with joy, teachers teach with purpose, and every day becomes an opportunity to grow, connect, and shine.” AWIS’s journey toward IB PYP authorization is both a culmination and a beginning: a celebration of what has been achieved and a commitment to the future. Every day, in classrooms and learning spaces like the one where students explore the mysteries of octopus tentacles, the vision of inquiry, curiosity, and global-minded learning comes alive—reminding everyone that this achievement belongs to the entire AWIS community, and that the best is yet to come.
