PA

For PA, we covered the lessons 33 and 34. For lesson 33, friends learned how to read and sound out IP and ILL word family words. For lesson 34, friends learned the Qu sound. In addition to those lessons, friends are learning about syllables. They learned that syllables are different than the number of letters in a word. For example, banana has 6 letters but only 3 syllables. For the PA lessons, students sing a song related to the lessons sound, practice blending the sounds, recognizing the sounds, and writing and reading the decodable words and books. There has also been a focus on spelling practice.  There is also a focus on sight words, with new words being practiced every for each decodable lesson.

The songs we used for PA time are as follows:

IP Family Song

Qu Word Song

Every Letter Has a Name and a Sound

Friends are also using Headsprout. Please use the app at home at your leisure to aid with reading progress.

Numeracy

Students learned about addition within ten. For example, 2+3=5 or 8+2=10.

Also, they had an introduction to place value. They learned about tens and ones. They learned that for every number, we can break it down into smaller parts. For example, 35 is three 10s and five 1s.

Craft

Airplane Craft- Friends used origami paper to fold, cut and glue different shapes to make an airplane.

Anna Pavlova Ballerina- Friends used scissors to make an origami snowflake that was used as the skirt for a ballerina.

Science Class

Morse Code- Friends used a Morse Code legend to transcribe and decode short messages in Morse Code. First, the class solved a sentence code. Then, they made their own code words. Then they played a game to try and solve the other students' codes.

Hand Crank Winch- Using string, a ribbon container, two plastic bottles, and other materials, students made a winch. With the use of this winch friends tried to lift many different sized objects to see what they could lift. The heavy objects were still hard to lift with the string, but the lighter objects could be picked up easily.

Handmade Paper-

Friends used recycled papers to make their own original paper. First, they ripped up the paper into small pieces. Then, they were soaked in water and formed into paper sheets.

Next Theme: Animals
Children acquire a further understanding of their own self by comparing themselves with animals, creatures that look different and behave differently from them.

In this unit we will answer the questions:

What can animals do?
Where do animals live in the world?
What do animals eat?
How do animals grow and reproduce?
